Monifieth Gala Success

Looking at the weather from my front door before I walked to the Blue Seaway, I feared how this would impact the Monifieth Gala. My umbrella was required; and thanks to the howling wind, I could hardly keep it upright. However, thankfully, it abated - and the sun appeared from behind a gargantuan, ominous cloud.

Throngs of people poured onto the green next to the Blue Seaway; and as I approached I noted that the car parks were totally full. Stalls of all shapes, sizes (and states of repair because of the wind) lined the green, and people mingled, shopped, sampled gin, stopped at the beer tent, and ate berries. I indulged myself in a fantastic chicken curry from Oor Tiffin, as well as a Jammie dodger blondie from Trina's Tasty Treats.

A variety of dogs, all very well behaved, were on show - and my colleague Cllr Beth Whiteside's Labrador even won a prize for waggiest tail! There, too, was the Medieval Village - a real sight for sore eyes after the pandemic disrupted the annual Medieval Fair.

I was so impressed by how many people were in attendance. However this was no surprise given the hard work of the organisers (who must be hugely commended), and the draw of the entertainment. I want to say in particular how brilliant the Makaton Choir were - they drew huge applause after every song.

Despite the weather - which was perfect for wind-surfing - the Gala was an enormous success. I am certain that it raised much for good causes such as the MCRG Community Hub, and Cycling Without Age. I am pleased, too, that the latter group signed up some volunteers on the day. Further, I know how much of a smile today's events will have brought to many residents' faces - as it did to mine.

Events like these are so important for small communities like ours. They are a chance to meet new people, support phenomenal local businesses, and sample all the amazing things Monifieth and her surrounds have to offer.

I cannot wait to see what comes next year.
