Scotland has the best support for families in the UK
Local SNP MSP Graeme Dey has welcomed new figures showing that almost 370,000 baby boxes have been delivered across Scotland, including 26336 in NHS Tayside since the scheme’s introduction.
The SNP Scottish Government introduced the Baby Box in 2017, entitling every newborn in Scotland to a box containing essential items intended to make sure that every child has the best possible start in life.
In total, 366,950 boxes have now been distributed to parents across Scotland since the start of the project. The estimated cost of items provided in the Baby Box is approximately £429.
The Baby Box is part of a wraparound package of support for families only available in Scotland, including the Scottish Child Payment and 1,140 hours of free childcare for three, four and eligible two-year-olds.
Lloyd Melville, the SNP candidate for the Angus South seat at Holyrood:
“Almost 370,000 babies have received baby boxes from this SNP government – including 26336 here in NHS Tayside - a truly outstanding achievement from a government committed to giving every child the best start in life.
“Providing essential items needed for the first six months of their child’s life is a particularly important gift to new parents when household budgets are under continued pressure due to rising bills under the UK Labour Government.
“The baby box is one of many transformative actions the SNP is taking to make a real difference to children and families only available in Scotland, like the game-changing Scottish Child payment and rollout of free school meals.
“But the reality is that while the SNP government continues to deliver bold policies in government for a fairer Scotland, with the limited powers of devolution, Westminster is accelerating more people into poverty.
“The SNP government is doing all it can - but the powers of devolution are reaching their limit. It is only with the full powers of independence that we can build a better future for every child born in Scotland.”
